The Best Face Cleansers According To Team Allies Of Skin

18 Dec 2017
What we’re washing our faces with, twice a day, every day.

As Derek Zoolander once wisely said, “Moisture is the essence of wetness, and wetness is the essence of beauty”. Cleansing is the foundation of any skincare regimen. It is the essential step at the end of the day that cleans your face of makeup, SPF, pollution and any other unwanted detritus of the day. In the morning, a quick cleanse gets rid of oil and impurities which build up overnight and helps prep your skin for your skincare routine.

However, not all cleansers are made equal. Many contain harsh cleansing agents that strip the skin. That tight feeling you sometimes get with cleansers? That’s a sign that your cleanser is too harsh; stripping essential moisture and affecting your skin’s pH balance. Over time, your skin’s acid mantle is compromised, leaving your skin that is irritated and dehydrated. Totally opposite of Mr Zoolander’s brilliant ethos.

Sound familiar? If so, it might be time to look for a new cleanser. If you’re at a loss for where to begin, here’s a round-up of our team’s favorite cleansers, straight from the Allies of Skin HQ:

Yuli Skincare Halycon Gel Cleanser

“I am obsessed with the Yuli Skincare Halcyon Cleanser. This herbal-but-pleasant smelling gel cleanser cleans without stripping and leaves my complexion feeling petal-soft and smooth. I love using this in the morning, but it also works great as a second cleanse after removing my makeup.” – Charmaine, Editorial Lead

desert essence tea tree oil cleanser

“I love the Desert Essence Original Thoroughly Clean Face Wash. It’s a really economical option – I buy a huge 32 fl. Oz (946ml) bottle for $23.25 off iHerb that lasts me a long time. Rich in tea tree oil and awapuhi, this gentle foaming cleanser has a light herbal scent and it is great for preventing blemishes and balancing combination skin.” – Vati, Operations

Ren Evercalm Cleansing Milk

“My favorite cleanser is the REN Evercalm Gentle Cleansing Milk. I have eczema-prone, combination skin that is easily irritated. This light, milky cleanser gently whisks away dirt and grime without ever leaving it feeling tight and dry. Over time, using this has greatly helped to balance my skin and I no longer get that dreaded, shiny T-zone look in the middle of the day.” – Gillian, Social Lead

Physiogel Dermo-cleanser

“I use the Physiogel Dermo-Cleanser. This extra mild, soap-free cleanser effectively does the job without irritating my skin, leaving it clean but soft and hydrated.” – Jim, Chief Financial Officer

Fresh Soy Face Cleanser

“I really enjoy using the Fresh Soy Face Cleanser because it leaves my skin feeling soft and hydrated. This light gel cleanser does a fairly decent job of removing light makeup but I normally also like to reach for my Bioderma Sensibio H20 before using it, as double cleansing is non-negotiable!” – Tiffany, Business Development.

  1. I love Fresh Soy Face Cleanser too (into my 3rd tube now) for how gentle it is to my skin! The Allies of Skin Purifying Cleanser + Masque is awesome too.

  2. Passing on a tip from my dermatologist: Never, never use foam cleansers. Chemicals that foam are harsh for your skin and dulls it overtime, creating that sallowness we all dread. Instead, reach for milk and gel cleansers! Over the years, I’ve personally used over 50 bottles of the Ren Milk Cleanser as my first cleanse (in a double cleansing routine). Massage the milk cleanser on dry face, then tissue off. What you see on the tissue will horrify you and make you that much more diligent with cleansing!! I follow up with a gel cleanser. It keeps my skin HAPPY. Happy CNY beauties!
